RELI 2720 Witches, Magic, & Alchemy

Magic looms large in religious and cultural imagination; examining what constitutes magic in different religions, cultures, and eras provides a basis for critical engagement with various conceptions of magic and provides a clear understanding of key concerns within Christianity. Magic bends or breaks the laws of nature, and magic users like witches and alchemists seek to understand, follow, and articulate magical methods. Witches and alchemists play significant roles in religion and philosophy, especially but not exclusively Christianity. Students will examine varying and developing views of witches and alchemists through the 19th century, reflecting on and engaging with Christian thought.
