PHIL 2530 African Philosophies

This course is an introduction to a variety of African philosophies, past and present. We will study some traditional worldviews of African people groups, which will usually include the Egyptian, Ethiopian, Akan, Yoruba, and Bantu peoples. We will then study the developments in African thought during the colonial and postcolonial periods, with attention given to the ways traditional ideas are retained, reinterpreted, and transformed amidst changing social and political contexts. In order to understand the significance of these ideas, we will also study some basic African history and geography.
