GOVT 3300 International Law
In 2004, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan stated the 2003 Iraq War violated international law. But what makes war legal or illegal? How do we determine the legality of war or state actions in global politics? Which sources and institutions shape these judgments? Why does international law matter for world politics? This course explores such questions through principles, sources, subjects, theories, and processes of international law. We will examine key texts, analyze how states, institutions, and individuals interpret and contest legal norms, and study how international law is continually shaped and reshaped through practice and adjudication.
