MS Genetic Counseling Degree Requirements

Degree Requirements

  • Successful completion of all course work (50 credits), with a cumulative B average (3.0) average.  No credit toward the degree will be allowed for grades below C (2.0).
  • Passing each clinical rotation (12 total credits) with satisfactory evaluations from the clinical supervisor, along with a completed ACGC logbook containing a minimum of 50 core participatory cases. 
  • Successful completion of a Master's Graduate Project and presentation.

Upon completion of the didactic, practicum, and research degree requirements, graduates will be awarded the degree Master of Science in Genetic Counseling and will be eligible to sit for the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) national certification exam.  The ABGC is the credentialing organization for the genetic counseling profession in the United States and Canada.  Certification by the ABGC indicates that individual practitioners have met the standards necessary to provide competent genetic counseling services.  Certification requirements are available on the ABGC website.
